We like to think of our lives as a series of choices. What we do. Who we love. Where we live. What we value. Who we become.
But long before we were making choices, we were learning the rules. What someone like us is supposed to want. Which parts of ourselves earn belonging — and which are better kept quiet. So here's the question:
How much of who you are did you actually choose?
Every life begins with an inheritance.
We inherit more than names, traditions, and family stories. We inherit expectations. Roles. Ideas about love, work, gender, money, success, beauty, duty, and belonging.
Culture hands us a script long before we know we're allowed to question it. And then, somewhere along the way, the script starts to sound like our own voice.
Maybe becoming ourselves isn't about inventing an entirely new person. Maybe it's about noticing what we've inherited — and deciding what we want to keep.
We make choices inside lives that were already being shaped for us.
Agency is real. But so are the families, cultures, histories, circumstances, and expectations that formed us before we ever had a say.
